Dr Bruce Lipton, PhD
A shift in scientific consciousness can be seen in the work and research of author, university professor and lecturer, Bruce Lipton PhD. Dr Lipton is a Cellular Biologist whose breakthrough research on the cell membrane made him a pioneer in field of the new biology. He is the author of The Biology of Belief: Unleashing the power of Consciousness, Matter and Miracles.
He is an internationally recognised authority on bridging science and spirit. He has been a guest speaker on dozens of TV and radio shows, as well as keynote presenter for national and international conferences.
Energetic Fields
Bruce Lipton's research in cell biology now provides the cutting-edge science to prove how holistic health therapies work. His research introduces a long-awaited paradigm shift in the biomedical sciences. This takes us away from conventional physics which sees the body as a machine composed of atoms and molecules, and towards a quantum physicists view, which reveals that underneath our apparently solid structure, we are composed of energy. We are thus energetic beings interacting with a field of energy. Our traditional Western medical paradigm focuses on the physical being but not on the energetic field or the flow of energy within the individual, where as the new biology has a more holistic approach based on the understanding that everything is connected.
The new aged phenomenon that we create our own reality now has scientific evidence to support it. Dr Lipton outlines how our thoughts and beliefs give off vibrations that effect the entire energy field, and he highlights how we are like a tuning fork which emanates from our head out into the field, thus shaping the world we are in.
Genes
Dr Lipton's work represents a paradigm shift which indicates that we are not in fact controlled by our genes. The popular scientific belief which sees the genes as all powerful, places us at the mercy of our genes and makes us feel powerless as human beings. However, when Dr Lipton removed the nucleus from the cell he discovered that the cell continued to live for weeks. This lead to the obvious conclusion that the nucleus with its DNA is not the brain of the cell and does not control it. The nucleus of the cell contains 50 percent DNA and 50 percent protein. Traditional science has examined the DNA and disregarded the protein. However, the cell research of Dr Lipton showed that the DNA is actually the reproductive system for the protein, and protein can be built from the blueprint of the DNA. In fact it now appears that only 5 percent of the population have conditions which are purely affected by defective genes. For the remaining ninety-five percent of the population, if they are failing in health Dr Lipton indicates that:
it is not something wrong with the genes and the proteins, it is something wrong with the body's signals. Inappropriate signals are the source of most human illnesses and dysfunctions.
There are 3 causes for this disruption in the signal:
- trauma: accidents cause a disruption in the brain signal;
- toxins: interfere with the bodies signaling chemistry;
- the mind: if the mind sends inappropriate signals at the wrong times, our systems become imbalanced and diseased.
This moves us away from conventional medicine which focuses on the chemistry and genes of the body. It takes us into a realm where we focus on both physical AND energetic signals, including thought.
Perception
Each cell can have over one-hundred-thousand protein receptors. The receptors are a way of the cell reading its environment (both physical and non-physical) through the proteins. In its aim to survive the cell reads signals that indicate that food is available or toxins are at large, for example.
The receptors are like switches, and they respond to a massive variety of environmental signals. They control the function of our lives through awareness of the environment, reading an environmental perception and adjusting the biology accordingly. Because perception is personal what this actually means is our perception of the world controls our behaviour.
If our perceptions are accurate then this provides a positive means of survival. However, if we are programmed with mis-perceptions and inaccurately read our environment, we inappropriately engage our responses.
Vital to our understanding of how genes work is the fact that perception also controls the read-out of the genes. How we see life ultimately determines which genes will be activated to provide for our survival. Therefore, if we have a mis-perception and inappropriately activate genes because we send a wrong signal, then we can subvert the function of the biology and actually cause disease and dysfunction.
We are not so much the victims of genes as we are the creator of our lives, selecting genes to control our systems, based upon our perception of reality.

Stress
Another important factor of Dr Lipton's research is based around the cell's response to stress. He highlights that a cell can only be in one of two states at any given time: growth or protection. If a cell is in protection, this shuts down growth processes so that the cell can engage in behaviours needed to maintain survival. Although the protective mechanisms of the cell are useful to ensure survival, the important question is just how much of our lives are spent in growth and how much in protection? Our cells go into protection mode due to perceptions made by our central nervous system including responses such as fear, stress etc. Stress responses shut down the immune system so that the body can go into fight or flight even if it is fighting a virus or bacteria infection. The obvious result of our fast paced, stressful Western lives is the debilitation of the immune system.
The immune system also shuts down the growth process of the cells. When we reach the point where the cells that are lost outnumber the cells that have been replaced, we start to express disease. And although our systems were not designed to cope with the level of stress we experience in our modern lives, the good news is, according to Dr Lipton:
if we change our perceptions, we can change our biology.
So how is this so? Well, we are all made up of trillions of cells, and our bodies and organs share the same patterns. The big difference is our perception of environmental signals, which are influenced by our beliefs. One person may visit London for a day and experience only poverty, chaos, crowds and pollution. Another person might go on exactly the same journey and experience, excitement, awe, contrast and cultural diversity. What we perceive affects our experience which in turn affects our biology.
Similarly we might experience a healthy environment but may believe that it is not healthy for us due to our programming. And if you perceive something to be a threat to you it changes your cellular behaviour from growth to protection.
Dr Lipton concludes that:
it is a faulty assumption that we are controlled by our genes. There are no cancer genes. It is not possible for a gene to activate or change on its own; for example, producing cancer. It is the environmental signal and our perception (belief) that contributes to a change in our system.
Dr Bruce Lipton on PSYCH-K & Emotional Freedom Technique
Dr Lipton recommends both PSYCH-KTM and EFT for the change of belief which effects biology at a cellular level:
PSYCH-KTM is a set of simple, self-empowering techniques to change your beliefs and perceptions that impact your life at a cellular level.
EFT is a simple, powerful process that can profoundly influence gene activity, health and behaviour.
